Illustrator 8 eps font encoding

Hi all,

I'm (still) writing adobe illustrator 8 files (according to the Adobe postscript 3 reference document) with in-house developed software, and now I'm struggling with some east-european characters. They aren't in the ISO Latin1 set (for example the Ł inŁódź), and I cant get illustrator to display those characters correctly. I tried fiddling with the TE command, adding those missing characters to the definition, but Illustrator seems to ignore that bit of the eps. (If I send the eps directly to the printer, it does print correctly, so the information in it is correct).

Also tried pasting such character in a text in illustrator, but when I do that, it strips the slash of the Ł and just displays an L.

Is it fundamentally impossible to use non-iso latin1 characters in an illustrator 8 eps, or am I missing some vital bit in my eps?

I know I can use the sdk to create eps's for a newer version of illustrator which has full unicode support (as far as the used font support it ofcourse), but that's something I'm not ready to implement at this point, so I'm looking for a solution within my current software, which, as stated, creates adobe illustrator 8 files.

Can anyone shed any light on this subject?

Greetings,

Paul
